But the speed of technology is getting away from them. Most parents know how to judge a park and decide if it is safe or not; few know how to judge Facebook, and therein lies the rub - people who want to commit crimes are switching to cybercrimes, because of the belief that's it's easier to get away with it. Is it? I don't think so, but I do think that until the current generation of children become parents, we will have a massive technological gap between adults and youth due to the sudden speed of change.

I've been on a crash course trying to learn all there is to know about Social Networking sites like Facebook. I also notice, through friends of mine, when Facebook seems like its trying to pull a fast one on users, by changing certain privacy settings to release your info without you knowing it... In the year since I started my account with them, they've changed the privacy settings at least 3 times now... Now they have this "Select partners" setting where if you go to a partners site, they have your info on their site before you even join it... They really should let people know when they're gonna make a change like that in my opinion... This is one of the many reasons why I wouldn't allow my sons to have an account, even when they're older due to the fact its such a broad scope of people Facebook reaches... I'm also taking a crash course on ins, and outs of the Computer... I gotta keep up to date on it so when my kids do start something like that in their teenage years, it's not like jibberish to me. How many parents don't even know how to use a computer, let alone monitor their kids browsing on one???

Have you read Steve Pinker, Veritas? He discusses how we live in the safest time ever contrary to most people's gut feelings.

I can't say I have. I just know these things, after studying a ton of history. We just hear more about horrible things happening.

well a few parents are sticking up for the kids side, i've create a group on facebook to try and settle this because i'm getting really tired of seeing this topic in the news and shows all the time. recently i asked my members, if this doesnt die down by monday which i think i will, to do a peaceful protest and write FACEBOOK on their hands, arms or clothes, just to tell my principal and the administration, that we have an opinion too and we can voice it (even though my principal touched on our side i think he didnt really tell our whole side) i dont really expect my classmates to do this but i'm almost always 50% wrong. on another note, any of you see this on the news because this was picked up by most of the national news

We can thank the countless news agencies for that. They concentrate so much time on the negative, and very little time towards positive aspects...
