Dropping Out Of School

Postby Nick » Tue Oct 12, 2010 7:27 pm

I just felt like posting this, if there is a thread on this already, feel free to delete it.

My friends just recently dropped out of school, and tried to fight with me that dropping out of school is the greatest thing for you. My response to that was:

'O.K first of all, you're an idiot. So you're telling me that dropping out like a failure, not getting your diploma, and NOT going to college is better than graduating?' I mean seriously, would you rather live with your parents till you're about 30, when you move out live in a shitty apartment building in some ghetto and have little to no money at all, or would you rather graduate, get a masters degree in College, and make a decent to a lot of money?

I hate it when people say school sucks and we don't need it. If there wasn't school, a good majority of the human population would be illiterate.

But hey, it's O.K! Drop Out! You'll do wonders for your countries economy. Let's all walk around acting like idiots.

There's isolated cases of people who became a success after dropping out of high school.

Rex Garrod's one.

Eminem's another one as he became successful in the music industry...

I wouldn't take that chance if I was still in school. In this day and age, most jobs require at the minimum, a High School Diploma. Some of the better jobs require proof of higher learning such as a degree. Unless your friends can invent things, or write songs, dropping out of High School's the worst mistake they've ever made.

I agree with you Ed. My life is going to be tied up with academia for the next 4 years (assuming I don't fail) but it is a rediculous blanket statement to claim that you NEED a diploma to succeed at life. If your friend takes a plumbing course he'll make good money for a minimal cost to start.

He might end up making less money in the long term than I will, but he also won't have student loans to pay back, and will be earning good money a lot sooner than I will.

Plus there's no guarantee that Diploma will net you that job you want the most. It's still the safer option to get the Education, even the immediate monetary return's not up to par with what it'll be after the Student loans are paid back. You're right, the need for a Degree, or Diploma to succeed in life is ridiculous. Certain jobs that are piece work, or hitting one button, I think you can train a monkey to do those. Yet you still need a Diploma to get those jobs too.

No offense, but let's not be judgmental here. If dropping out of school makes your friend happy, then let him go for it. In the end, he's the one who has to deal with the long-term results. To be honest, school really isn't for everyone. There are some people who go and are happy there, and they strive to get the education that they want. There are others, however, who have other plans for their lives, and school is not really appealing to them. Me, I fall in the latter category. I go to school, but I don't like it there. I don't thing school is really my thing. My parents kinda rushed me into college before I had a proper plan set about my life, and, even after 3 years of attending this college, I still don't know what I'm doing here. I think the most important thing anyone can do in this life is to do what makes them happy. Life is too short to spend it with regrets or stuck in some situation you would rather not be in. So if dropping out of school is what your friend wants to do, then that's his choice. But keep in mind that that;s HIS choice to do so.

Dropping out of College is different than dropping out of High School, which is what Nick's talking about here. Dropping out of High School will put his friend behind the 8 ball right away. Getting a job without a Diploma's hard enough. I wasn't the school type myself, but, I finished. I didn't go to College for a year, but I went after taking a year to live it up some. I'm still not the school type 20 years now since I graduated, but I'm heading to a Technical Institute to start learning for a new career.

Oops, I must've misread the post then.

Anyway, you kinda went the route that I did, Ed. I went to a tech college when I got out of high school because I didn't know if I was ready for college. The weird part is, i felt more at home at the tech college then I did in an actual college. But at least I did graduate from tech, so I do have something to fall back on if I decide I don't want to be in college anymore.

It's always good to have a fallback plan. I'm doing the Tech College, and I'm gonna do the online Course to get a certification in the Home Inspection field. I'll be certified in 6 weeks, and I can get contracts to inspect houses for sale, or demolition. That'll be my own business I can run while I pursue the Tech School Education.

I think Tech College is the route to go to prepare me for the job field I'd like to get into. I'd like to get a job right away after I get my Associates Degree, then see if I can resume schooling to get my Bachelors Degree.

It seems like nowadays, the conventional 9 to 5 job is becoming a thing of the past anymore.

Im not going to defend dropping out of school because now a days education is important and such, but both my parents dropped out. One at 15 (mum) and another at 16 (dad) but they had their reasons, my mother did to get a job to help support her mother and father being one of 5 kids, and school just wasnt for my father. Now my mums 54 and my dads 58, they both are still working and have supported 2 kids. So basically you dont need an education to 'succed' in life. Although times have changed from around 30 years ago, it still is personal prefrence at the end of the day.

I agree, but I know there are a lot of people who think education is the end-all, be-all of life. I agree that being educated is important, but I think it is more important to be happy, to do things that make you happy, and to not feel like you're being forced to do something, especially if it makes you unhappy. So if someone is of the mindset that school is not for them and want to do something else with their lives, then, by all means they should be allowed to pursue that without having other people question their decision.
