Chapter 28

Danni was in the elevator heading up to the suite she and Corey were sharing with Mark. Lost in thought, she reminisced on her day so far.

She and Rebecca had taken the boys, Corey and Cameron, to the WrestleMania Axccess area to check it out. Stephanie had given them, along with all the other families there, passes to see it before it was open to the public. The boys were having a good time. Checking out Shawn’s display, Daniel (head of security) was there and had let Cameron put on some of his dads old ring gear. She and Rebecca had laughed; Cameron looked so much like Shawn in the old black and red gear. Touring “The Undertakers” graveyard she overheard Corey say to Cameron “someday I’m going to be just like Mark.” Cameron had turned to him and replied “I’m gonna be just like my dad too.”

The rock wall was….interesting and Daniel had laughed at their antics.
Danni and Rebecca were standing outside the ring that was set up, Daniel in tow, watching the boys put on ‘the best wrestling match of the century’ when Vince walked up to them.

“Good morning Ladies.” Vince said with a smile. “I see your boys are enjoying themselves.”
“Hell Vince.” Rebecca smiled at him. “As you can see they are practicing to join the WWE when they get older.”
Laughing Vince watched them for a few seconds. Then he got a thoughtful look on his face. “You never know….” Vince turned to Danni “I really need to talk to you. You haven’t given me an answer yet. Can we please head over to my office?”
“I don’t know….” Danni replied looking over at the boys.
Rebecca stepped in “Don’t worry, I’ll watch Corey. If you aren’t done by the time they are, I can take them to the pool at the hotel.” Rebecca looked at the boys “They are about the same size, Cameron has an extra swimsuit.”
Sighing Danni replied “OK, just let me get Cor’s attention.”
Vince waited while Danni and Corey spoke at the ring apron.
Both boys waved and yelled “Hi Uncle Vince!” before returning to their match.
Walking back Danni had a smile on her face. “OK Vince, I got my um…instructions.” She laughed. “Let’s go.

The elevator door opened. Danni shook her head. ‘Well it’s done.’ She thought to herself. Walking down the hallway she ran into Rebecca and the boys.
“Well?” Corey asked “Did you tell Uncle Vince yes?”
Danni laughed “Yes you little demon, I did.”
A huge smile lit up his face. “Cool! See you later mom.” He said with a wave goodbye and an elbow in Cameron’s side.
Rebecca smiled at her “Shawn’s back.” She told Danni as she hurried to catch up to the boys before they left without her.
Danni sighed as she continued down the hallway. She knew what that meant. Mark, Shawn and Paul had gotten together to go over any last minute issues for the WrestleMania match. ‘I just hope Mark is as happy.’ She thought.

Mark was sitting on a lounge on the balcony of their suite when she walked in. Danni smiled, he was wearing jeans and a black shirt. “Dam he still takes my breath away.” She said softly. Grabbing two beers out of the cooler, she walked outside. Putting the beers on the table next to Mark she greeted him “Hello love.” As she leaned down for a kiss.

“Hi Darlin.” Mark responded when the pulled apart. Mark looked around as the little ‘whirlwind’ that was Corey didn’t jump on him as he usually did. “Where’s Corey? Didn’t you guys head over to Axcess?”

Danni chuckled “Yes we did. Rebecca took the ‘unholy duo’ swimming.”

Mark started chuckling. He knew exactly who she meant. Corey and Cameron had been as thick as brothers ever since they met at SummerSlam last year. Mark was in a teasing mood so he smirked “Unholy duo uh?”

Danni laughed “Oh yeah. After they um….helped with Shawn’s display, we ran into John. He of course let them sit and ‘drive’ some of his muscle cars on display. Then we proceeded to your graveyard.” Danni laughed again.

Smiling Mark asked “OK, what happened?”

“They told the crew they had the tomestomes in the wrong order.” She teased him.

“They didn’t…..”

“Yes,” Danni smiled “but they were right. The rock wall….let’s just say those two have no fear.”

Mark chuckled at the look on Danni’s face.
“Oh ha ha.” Danni chuckled “It was at that point the Daniel told us jokingly that he was going to set up a detail just for those two.” She got a thoughtful look, “At least I think he was joking.”

Mark was laughing outright at this point. “He didn’t….”

“Oh yes he did.” Danni smiled “But you should have seen Daniels face when they told the ring crew the ropes weren’t….right. They needed to be tighter so they could perform better.”

Mark almost doubled over with laughter. “I can just see those two doing that.” Danni laughed with him for a minute, and then got quiet.

“Darlin, is something wrong? They didn’t get hurt or anything did they?” Mark asked her concerned.

Danni loved the way he was always looking out for her son. “No love. It’s just….Vince cornered me for a meeting.”

Mark sobered up a bit. “Ah. I thought he might. He asked me where you were.” Mark took her hand. “So, what happened?”

Danni sighed. “I told him yes, I’ll take the training job in Florida.”

Squeezing Danni’s hand he replied “That’s what you wanted…right? I mean we’ve been talking about this for months.”

“Oh love, you know it is. This is my dream job.” Danni sighed again.

“So, what’s the matter?” he asked, concern in his voice.

“It’s just…..” Danni couldn’t finish.

Mark had a feeling he knew what was on her mind. “So when do we need to be in Florida?”

Danni seemed to miss the ‘we’ Mark had thrown in there “I told Vince I needed until the end of June. I want to make sure Kyler gets off to Japan for his job before Corey and I go.”

Mark let go of her hand and started playing with his beer bottle, spinning it around in his hands, taking small sips. ‘This is the perfect time….’ He thought to himself.

Danni wasn’t so deep in thought that she missed what Mark was doing. He seemed to have something on his mind. She let him work it through. He’s get around to it eventually.

“Um, Danni….I’ve been thinking…” he started, still looking down at the beer in his hands.

Danni looked up at him and teased him “It that a good thing?”

Mark put his beer down and looked up into her eyes. “I’m serious.”

“OK love, what is it?” That got her attention.

“I’ve been thinking….I mean….this isn’t as easy as I thought it would be.” He sighed.

Danni put her hand on his leg “Whatever it is Mark, you can tell me.” Danni’s heart dropped a bit in her chest. Thoughts ran through her head. ‘Was he getting tired of her? Was the move too much? Was her actually joining the WWE not right for him? But they had talked and he had been supportive.’

“You know your boys are great.” He started

Danni smiled slightly “Yeah, they’re pretty good.”

Smiling slightly Mark continued “That’s part of why I want to talk to you.”

Danni sighed “Mark….I would understand if the whole family thing is….a bit much.”

Mark looked up startled “What?....Oh no, that’s not what I meant at all.”
Mark smiled into her eyes “Danni, your kids are great, I actually care about them a great deal. Kyler has turned into a great friend and young man.” He sighed “Corey is like the son I never had.”

Danni smiled “They care a great deal about you too.”

Taking one of her hands in his “Just let me get through this ok?”

Danni nodded.
Mark took a deep breath “From the day I meet you I knew….there was something special between us.” He looked down nervously, then back up into her blue eyes.
Mark smiled “You’re the partner I’ve been looking for. I love the way you can kick most any ‘divas’ ass…and some of the guys too.” He chuckled “I love how you let me ‘take care of you’ even though you’re more than capable of taking care of yourself….I love how you handle your boys….The way you’ve become part of ‘the gang’ without even trying….The way you take care of me.” Mark smirked “That you’re not jealous when I get mobbed by fans. You never complain when I’m away….you’re there with a smile when I get home. The fact that I can’t wait to get home.” Mark sighed “I’m not very good at this sort of thing….”

Danni’s heart had gone from her stomach to her throat. Was she hearing what she thought she was hearing? “You’re doing just fine.” She managed to whisper.

Mark smiled “There’s so much about you that I love. Your loving and caring nature….the way you are up to just about anything….your incredible sensuality….your tenderness…your wicked sense of humor….” He paused “Mostly I just love being with you. It doesn’t seem to matter where we are either. On the road, in an airport, (he chuckled) any and every type of hotel.” He sighed “Staying at home watching movies, hanging out with the boys. It just….doesn’t matter as long as we’re together.”
Mark slid off the lounge onto his right knee, fumbled in his front jeans pocket for a second. Smiling he pulled out a ring.
He had found it a month ago and showed it to Glen. It was a black 1 carat diamond with smaller diamonds running down channels on either side. Glen had smiled and told him not to wait too long.

Mark looked into Danni’s intensely blue eyes. Quietly he said “You opened up my heart again. Danni….be mine….marry me.”

A single tear rolled down Danni face as she moved over next to him. Her voice wouldn’t work as her hand reached up and gently held the side of his face. Finally she whispered “Don’t you know….I’m already yours.”

His green eyes flashed and he smiled “Does that mean yes?” he whispered.

“Yes….” She replied as Mark slid the ring onto her finger, it was a perfect fit. Pulling Danni into his arms, he kissed her like he would never let her go.

Chapter 29

“Look, are you sure he’s not gonna find out?” Matt Striker asked in a nervous voice.
“I thought you said you could do it and leave no trace.” Rosa snapped back.
Matt sighed “Yes I can, but….you didn’t tell me who……”
Snapping again “It shouldn’t matter! Not if you do it right.” Rosa replied. “Look I finally have what I need.” Then she moved closer and purred in his ear “you know what I’ll give you if you do it.”
Matt got straight to work.


It was about a week after Danni got home, that the envelope came by messenger. Puzzled she looked at the outside, there was no name or address. With a shrug she opened the envelope and pulled out what was in there.

Danni’s heart stopped and she couldn’t breathe. In her hand were pictures of Mark, with another woman. The note with them was typed “He’s not the person you thought he was.”

Not believing her eyes, all she could do was stare. ‘This can’t be’ she thought ‘there is no way he would do this’. She made it to the couch before her knees gave out.

A few minutes later Kyler came out of his room and found her there. Just sitting on the couch, tears running down her face.
“Mom?” he asked. When she didn’t respond he touched her shoulder “Mom. What’s the matter? He asked again, the concern in his voice finally got through to her.

Danni looked up in to the concerned face of her son. She had never hidden anything from him, so she just handed him the pictures and the note.

Kyler took one look and said “There is no way I would believe this. He loves you too much.”

“That’s what I thought.” She responded softly.

Kyler pulled his phone out of his pocked and punched in Mark’s number. Kyler looked at his mom, puzzlement on his face. “It won’t go through.”
The look on his mom’s face, he could only describe it as completely devastated.
“Where’s your phone?” Kyler asked, already going for her purse.
“It’s… it’s on the counter.” Danni finally managed to get out.
Kyler tried her phone, but got the same response. He didn’t know what to do.


Mark walked into is hotel room. He was so tired. The practice hadn’t gone well. He had banged his shoulder again and it hurt like a mother. He sat down and tried to get himself together. Danni would be waiting to hear from him. A couple of minutes later he got up off the couch and walked over to the table where he had just thrown his gear bag. As he pulled it over to him to get his phone out, an envelope fell on the floor.

“Huh..Vince must have some last minute changes again.” Bending over he picked it up and opened it. What he pulled out was not a schedule change. His heart stopped. In his hand was picture of Danni, and she was hugging another man. The smile on her face, he knew that smile. It was the same one he saw on her face when she looked at him or her boys.
There was a piece of paper with the picture, typed. “Did you really think she was just waiting around for you?”

Mark sat down hard on the chair. He just couldn’t believe it.
Glenn found him there about an hour later when he came in from his workout.

“Hey bro….what’s wrong?” Glenn asked when he saw Marks face.
Mark couldn’t even answer. He just handed the picture and note to his ‘bro’.

Glenn looked at the picture and the note, and then looked back at a devastated Mark.
“This could be a picture of anyone you know.” Glenn finally said, trying to break Mark out of his depression. “Did you call her?”

“I…. I…. I just can’t.” Mark finally managed to get out. “What… I mean…. Bro, I just don’t know what to do.”

Glenn sighed and reached into his pocket to get his phone. He dialed Danni’s number. It wouldn’t go through. Puzzled he grabbed Mark’s from his bag. Same thing. He couldn’t understand it.

Mark got up and walked out the door.



2 weeks later Danni finally answered the call from Stephanie. She had avoided all contact with anyone associated with the WWE when she couldn’t get Mark or Glenn on the phone. She was so depressed. She had given her notice to work when she had gotten her signing bonus. She had planned to pack up the house a little at a time, but nothing had really gotten done.

“Hello?” Danni said dispiritedly.
“Oh My God! Are you OK?” Stephanie asked in a concerned voice.
Danni sighed. “I’m here. That’s about all I can say.” She replied.
“What happened?”
“I’m not really sure. But I don’t want to talk about it, OK?” Danni said.
Stephanie sighed “OK, but you know I’m here if you need me, right?”
Danni got a very slight smile on her face. “Yea, I know Steph.”
“Well…..” Stephanie began.
Danni stopped her “Your dad asked you to call me, didn’t he? He wants to know if I’m still going to take the job in Florida right?”
“Yes, he did and does.” Stephanie replied.
Danni took a deep breathe “You can tell him yes. I won’t back out of the contract I made with him.”
With concern in her voice Stephanie asked “Are you sure?”
The small laugh that came out of Danni’s voice was not one of happiness. “Steph… it’s all I have to look forward to anymore.”
“But what about Mark….” Stephanie started.
“It’s over.” Danni said with steel in her voice.
Stephanie sighed “OK. I’ll see you soon. I’ll bring the paperwork you need over to you personally.”
“You don’t….” Danni began.
“Yes, I do.” Stephanie smiled sadly. ‘If only to make sure she’s really OK’ she thought to herself.







“Look Vince….I told you, he’s not talking to anyone.” Glenn sighed on the phone. “He’s barley talking to me. And that’s only about work.” What Glenn didn’t tell Vince was that Mark was drinking a lot of the time he wasn’t working.






It was another month before Pam finally got any answers.
“Glenn, sweetheart, you have got to tell me what is going on with Mark and Danni?” Pam asked him with concern in her voice.
Glenn sighed “you know I promised him.”
Pam put her hand on his shoulder “I know but, maybe I can help?” she said hopefully.
Glenn thought for a few minutes. Finally he said “He’s next door. Maybe he’ll talk to you.”
Pam went next door immediately. She had to knock three different times before he finally answered.
“What?” Mark growled.
Pam pushed her way inside. She crossed her arms and stared at him for a minute. “Mark, you need to talk to me.” She finally blurted out.
Mark didn’t answer. He pulled out his wallet and handed the picture and note he carried everywhere and handed them to her.

Pam studied the picture he handed her. Something was tugging at the back of her mind. He seemed familiar somehow. Then she asked “Have you tried to talk to her?”

Mark smirked “She’s not taking my calls anymore. What else is there to say? Now leave me alone.” And he turned his back to her.

Pam waited a few seconds, and then walked out the door and back to her and Glenn’s room.

“Well?” Glenn asked when she came back in.
Pam shrugged. “At least I know now.”
“Have you talked to Danni?” Glenn wanted to know.
She shook her head. “She’s not taking my calls, and I haven’t been home for any length of time to stop by.” She sighed. “It will be about another week before I can.”





Banging on the door brought Danni out of the back bedroom where she had been packing.
“Come on! I know you’re in there! Your car is in the drive way!” Danni heard as she opened the door to see Pam standing on her porch, raising her hand to bang again.
Danni sighed. “Hi Pam.”
Pam gave her a look. “You’ve been ignoring my calls. Did you really think I would let that go?” She said as she walked into the house.
Danni shrugged “I’ve been ignoring everybody’s call, not just yours.”

Pam gave her a hug and sat down on the couch. “OK, spill it.”
Danni’s eyes got misty and she sat down and told Pam everything.

Pam listened and her heart almost broke to see Danni in the state she was in. “Can I see the pictures?” she asked softly.

Tears running down her face, Danni got up to get the envelope she had put in her bedroom. She hadn’t wanted Corey to see them. He was upset enough that Mark wasn’t around anymore.

Pam noticed a couple of new pictures hanging up and walked over to check them out when Danni had left the living room. There was a new one of the boys, and one of Danni and her brother Donald. She took a second look and it finally hit her.

As Danni walked back in, envelope in hand Pam turned and asked her “When did you see Don, and when did he let his hair grow out?”

Danni finally smiled “He and Becky came over from Germany about three months ago. They went down and saw mom too.” Then Danni got a puzzled look on her face. “His hair? I guess after he got out of the Army. Why? You’ve seen him with longer.” She chuckled. It was a standing joke that Don had hair longer than any of the girls he new before he joined the Army.

Pam grabbed Danni’s hand and pulled her to the couch. “Sis, we’ve got to talk.”
