Greetings from the dark side. It has been a little while, but I’m back with Post-Wrestlemania thoughts and thoughts on the future of the Undertaker. Let’s go back to April 1st and the Hell in a Cell match between Undertaker and Triple H. Wow. It may be a matter of (bias) opinion but this match saved Wrestlemania 28 in my opinion. On a card that was certainly star studded with a main event match that was hyped for a full year, this Wrestlemania had every reason to be the greatest Wrestlemania and possibly the greatest PPV of all time. However, hype trumped substance and the PPV seemed to fall flat and secure itself in being mediocre at best. Well, all but one match of course. The Game vs The Phenom. “The End of an Era” match. This match displayed the emotion, physicality, psychology and downright great action that you would come to expect from Triple H and Undertaker on the grandest stage of them all. It went beyond expectations ultimately surpassing everything that their first and second encounters at Wrestlemania did. Shawn Michaels certainly helped adding to the drama as well. The match itself proved that Undertaker is and was the man of his era, that he can still go all out at not only Wrestlemania, but when placed in extreme situations such as hell in the cell and maybe most importantly prove that well; the Undertaker has still got it. Was it the end for the deadman? Was it the last time we will see the streak defended? My heart says no, it was not the last of anything. The phenom looked great, moved around the ring great and most surprisingly, seemed in good shape when it was all said and done after one of the hardest fought victories (if not the hardest) of his career. No one comes more prepared to Wrestlemania than the deadman and that is why the streak lives at 20-0. But what is next for Taker at this point?

Well I think we have seen the last of the Taker/HHH/HBK scenario for good and it was closed in a proper manner. DX and the phenom. It was a sight to behold as they all embraced at the ramp before leaving together for what must be believed will be the last time together. I have had the belief for years now that the Undertaker will return on a yearly basis to defend the streak from whoever is brave enough, dumb enough or just wants to make a name for themselves by putting to an end to the greatest record in all of pro wrestling. But this year another variable has been thrown into the mix. Another former rival of the phenoms and that mans name is Brock Lesnar. As of right now, there is no situation developing whatsoever between Brock and Taker but my belief is that it will come to fruition before years end. Many believe that because of Taker seemingly in good shape for Wrestlemania, he will be back well before Wrestlemania this time, possibly even by Summerslam. This would certainly be welcome and less of a surprise than in the past couple years where injuries were certainly holding back the deadman from wrestling full time. Is there another title run in the phenoms storied career? Perhaps but it is unlikely and certainly not necessary at this point and time. There are still many superstars on the roster who would no doubt benefit from facing the phenom and of course the aspect of new matches for the fans featuring Taker is always an exciting thing. I believe we are about to see the last run of the Undertaker and that it will begin in 2012 leading up to Wrestlemania. A match with Brock Lesnar is very possible and even a big showdown with John Cena is still rumored. And of course there are always the Sting theories which is not entirely out of the question as nothing ever is in the WWE.

No matter what the phenom chooses, the deadman is not finished. We have certainly not seen the last of the Undertaker as he proved that he is still able to perform at the quality level needed to be a top player in any format. I have no doubt that the streak will continue as long as he wants it to and that we can expect 21-0 against a top name opponent come Wrestlemania 29. I think Taker will make his presence felt by Summerslam or Survivor Series at the latest which will mark 22 years that the Undertaker has been taking souls. Nothing is certain but things sure feel more certain that Taker will be in the mix more so than we have been used to seeing since 2009. The Undertaker has nothing to prove but so many other superstars do and why not call out the phenom to make a name for themselves? It’s good for their careers, it’s good for the business and most of all, it’s good for the fans. The Undertaker’s streak reigns supreme at 20-0, a legendary achievement that will likely never be duplicated. Not even close. I don’t see it ever ending no matter who is lucky/unlucky enough to stare across the ring into the eyes of the phenom. My money is personally on Brock Lesnar to try and break the streak and it will take a perfect performance and brutal violence from the phenom to beat him but I expect nothing less. The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar put on some amazing matches in 2002 with Lesnar seemingly having the edge at the time. I don’t feel John Cena is the man to challenge the streak simply judging by his character alone. And as far as Sting goes, well; I’ll believe that when my eyes see it. Until then, be confident that the Undertaker and Brock Lesnar are on a collision course that will likely send one or the other out of the WWE for good and mark my words, it won’t be the phenom. The Undertaker will be back and sooner than most think. The dark days of the WWE are not yet at an end.

We noted before that The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar or John Cena is penciled in for the WrestleMania 29 main event with Lesnar being the most likely opponent, depending on how his current run goes between now and late 2012. There has been debate over who would be Lesnar’s perfect WrestleMania opponent as Steve Austin and The Undertaker would also fit.
On a related note, the idea of Lesnar vs. Randy Orton main eventing this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view was thrown around this past week.

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

I really don’t wanna post this as it is too early for WM29 speculation IMO. But I found this too intriguing to pass up. Personally, I don’t care what Rock & Cena do next year. I saw their match & enjoyed it. I like the idea of Taker & Austin and feel that Lesnar should face either Punk or perhaps more so, Randy Orton. I do think Lesnar should be tombstoned and locked in Hell’s Gate at some point. He deserves that more than anything right now.

Personally, if there is any hold that can be number one aside from Hell’s Gate, it has to be The Sharpshooter as it has been used by more than one wrestler, executed by submission specialists, most notably Bret & Owen Hart as well as Chris Benoit and has forced many to tap out.

Earlier reports suggested The Undertaker will work several more WrestleMania events as long as he is able to but another source expects him to work just next year’s show in New Jersey. Taker’s left shoulder was in bad shape and he was banged up when the Hell in a Cell match with Triple H was over at WrestleMania 28. However, reports were that he came out of Hell in a Cell less injured than he came out of the WrestleMania 27 match.

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

This is why every report read on the net should be taken with a “grain of salt.” You never know what’s true and what isn’t until you see it when your own eyes. But bottom line is the man has earned the right to do what he wants.

Wrestlemania 28 Review

P.S. Sorry for being late to post this. It’s because I had a cold. But I’m all good now.

Intro: Focused mostly on The Rock and John Cena, but also included HIAC. I was surprised they left Punk and Jericho out. The dialogue and background music was was good. But not as good as past Wrestlemania intros was. Clearly, there have been better backkground music and dialogue before.

There was no opening pyro. But I actually like that because to me, pyros are overused and not having an opening into felt like a throwback to the great old days when the WWF was better than WWE is now. It just adds a majestic type of feel like we’re going to experience something we’ve never experienced before. And boy, we sure would!
For the past three years, WM has been a lackluster event that wasn’t worth the price and was saved by one match. That match being Taker’s match. But WM28 is what WM is and should be about. Only problem is it wasn’t like that throughout the entire event. I hope we get a true WM next year that is better than WM28, if possible as I will be attending WM29.

Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus – WHC
An 18 second World Title match. That’s what this was. I didn’t expect it to last as long as the other 3 main events since it got very little attention. But 18 seconds? I can’t really review this except for saving that was an awesome Brogue Kick.
Winner: Sheamus

Randy Orton vs. Kane
A slow match. It was physical though. Better than I thought it would be. What surprised me was that Kane won. But I was glad he did since he hasn’t won a one on one match at WM since…a long time. Wicked Chokeslam off the top rope!
Winner; Kane

Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show – I.C. Title
Let’s be honest. We all knew this wasn’t gonna be a classic or a memorable match. But I got what many others wanted as well: A positive WM moment for Big Show. He deserves it.
Winner: Big Show

Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs. Beth Phoenix & Eve
Didn’t see this cause didn’t want to. I’ve been outspoken for a long time about my feelings on celebrities having wrestling matches anywhere, much less at WM. I know it’s for publicity. But you don’t need celebrities, inexperienced or not in matches to get publicity. Despite Maria & Snooki competing at WM, Tyson’s WM14 involvement garned more publicity than both of them combined and he didn’t wrestle at WM!
But out of all the celebrity matches I have seen at WM, this was the best one. That’s not really saying much though. Gotta hand it to Kelly Kelly here. She did really good. I loved her Glam Slam counter.

Winners: Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos

The Undertaker vs. Triple H – “The End Of An Era” Hell In A Cell match with HBK as special guest referee
What can I say about this that hasn’t already been said? First off, it was great having JR calling this. I always said if there is one event a year JR should call, it’s WM. If one match, Taker’s WM match. It was reported & I think JR conformed that he called HIAC at Taker’s request. Rock & Cena may be once in a lifetime. But Taker/HHH/HBK in the ring at the same time is the last in a lifetime. I think that’s what The End Of An Era meant. People think this means Taker’s finished. I see him coming back for WM29 or possibly before. Considering the shape the man was, I don’t see him retired yet. I hope he does compete at WM29 as I’m attending the show just for that. He’s the reason I still watch WWE. When he leaves, WWE will lose tons of viewers. This one is one for the ages and deserves multiple views. Love Taker;s mohawk. But I was diggin the spiked entrance attire just as much if not more. Two good points were brought up during the bout. One from Cole who stated that every match refereed by HBK that HHH has been in, HHH has won. To add further speculation to the possibility of HBK causing Taker to be screwed, they could have also stated that HBK has refereed one math Taker was in which was Summerslam 97 against Bret. And HBK losed his cool and ended up costing Taker the match that night. The second good point was brought up by Lawler who said Taker cut his hair daily till HHH accepted the match because it was driving him crazy. To me that meant Taker cut his hair because he didn’t wanna look the same way he did at WM27 meaning something had to change so he decided his hair look would be different for WM28. It also meant that he’d do anything this time to win even letting his trademark long hair be no more. After a hell of a match which saw tons of chair shots being dished out with Taker taking so many vicious ones repeatedly, there was a huge bruise on his back, Taker eventually won & is now 20-0. What followed must be seen with your own eyes. I nor anyone else can do the aftermath justice so I rather not try.
Winner: The true Mr. WM IMO, The Undertaker

Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny
I did not pay attention this because I didn’t want to. I thought since this was to see who controlled RAW & SD, this should have been saved for either RAW or SD. I also knew Ryder’s stupidity would cause Team Johnny to win.
Winner: Team Johnny

CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho – WWE Title
Either this or HIAC deserved to close the show as these matches were the show stealers. GREAT! Just a great match that really lived up to my expectations. Their feud is continuing so I hope to see more show stealing matches from these two.
Winner: Punk

The Rock vs. John Cena
I was upset because my cable went out as The Rock was coming out. It went on and off a few times before going off again. It went back to normal as the last picture frame started fading out. So I missed the match. But since it was still fading out, I knew who won. Based on reports, I didn’t miss much so I’m not angry anymore.
Winner: The Rock

All in all, better WM than the last 3. Match of the night was HIAC. But IMO, Punk/Jericho was not far behind. If anything, those two bouts were worth the price alone.

I am working on a blog on the HIAC match specifically as well as several other blogs. I will have them all up eventually even though the HIAC blog will be late since WM’s been over for a while now. However, it deserves to have it’s own blog posted anyways. It’s the least I can do out of appreciation.

–Despite speculation that his match at WrestleMania 28 might have been his last, the talk backstage at WrestleMania was how great the Undertaker looked in the ring. After undergoing two major surgeries in the past year, the belief is that Undertaker has several more matches left in him, and will almost certainly work WrestleMania 29.–

This is good news, at the same time there’s no specifics on when Taker will return, if even this year at all. Right now, it looks like the Wrestlemania 29 build up will be the next time we see Taker. You never know though. At this stage of his career, he can come and go whenever he wants.

- WWEDVDNews.com has new details on WWE’s feature on The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak, which hits stores on July 24th. Every Undertaker WrestleMania match will be included in its entirety and there will be a biography looking at Taker’s WrestleMania career and beyond.

Here is the official synopsis, courtesy of WWEDVDNews.com:

“It is the most impressive feat in the history of Sports Entertainment, and one that may never be duplicated. Twenty times Undertaker has stepped in the ring at the Showcase of the Immortals, WrestleMania, and 20 times he’s had his hand raised in victory. Undertaker has faced some of the biggest names in WWE history, including Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Ric Flair, Edge, Kane, Batista, Randy Orton, and more, and always claimed their souls.

Now for the first time ever, every match in its entirety is collected in one release—Undertaker: The Streak. In addition to every match, the DVD also includes a never-before-seen documentary discussing the historic, unprecedented run.”
